On Biodynamic farms we seek to enhance the soil’s structure and nutrient cycles as well as plant growth and development, with the use of specific farm-sourced materials known as ‘preparations’. These Biodynamic Preparations are used in conjunction with established agricultural practices such as composting and manuring, crop and pasture rotations, tree planting and integrated use of livestock. The preparations are designed to work in line with the natural biological processes and cycles, which are the very essence of soil fertility. They were developed based on indications given by Dr Rudolf Steiner in 1924. They are not fertilizers in themselves but greatly assist the fertilizing process. As such they only need to be used in very small quantities.
In brief the Cow Horn or Horn Manure Preparation (also known as Preparation 500) is used to enliven the soil, increasing the micro flora and availability of nutrients and trace elements. The Horn Silica Preparation (also known as Preparation 501) enhances the light and warmth assimilation of the plant.
The Compost Preparations (individually known as Preparations 502 – 507) are based on various plant extracts such as Yarrow, Chamomile, Oak bark and others promote nutrient cycles and humus formation in the soil.
The Preparations Group meet on the third Wednesday of every month for Preparation making and general discussions including problem solving, and any other topic associated with Biodynamics.
All preparations are made by members of the HBG Preparations Group.
